Todd A. Johnson, PharmD, was born and raised in St. Paul, MN and is a third generation pharmacist. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and became a faculty member of the College of Pharmacy in 1976.
Supported initially by an Area Health Education Center grant to site health professionals in rural areas, he became the first outstate clinical pharmacist in Minnesota and was given the task of establishing clinical pharmacy services in the Fergus Falls area. Fergus Falls is a community of 14,000 located in west central Minnesota, 180 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
He currently serves as the Director of Clinical Pharmacy at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls. He has precepted U of M pharmacy students on Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential rotations for 38 years and works with the Office of Experiential Education. He also precepts NDSU College of Pharmacy students and serves as Residency Program Director for two PGY1 ASHP Residency positions.
Today he works with eight of his former students, coordinating clinical pharmacy consultative services throughout western Minnesota to long term care facilities, critical access hospitals, community behavioral health hospitals, an addiction and recovery inpatient unit, a regional hospice organization, assisted living facilities, area agencies on aging, etc. He also coordinates an interprofessional experience team named “Right Side Up” which consists of health professional students (including pharmacy, medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy and nursing) performing fall risk assessments on at-risk elders in their homes. The team was awarded the 2011 Team of the Year from the Minnesota Rural Health Association.
