Focus of Change Effort: The pursuit of a society free from prescription abuse starts with a change to the way we as healthcare professionals communicate the risks. I declare we can do better to prevent the development of opioid abuse.
Pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare professionals in our communities and are trusted with translating medication information to their patients. This makes the pharmacist an ideal source for public awareness, especially when there is an unfulfilled need or danger that can be addressed with their action.
Leftover opioids form this need as they can be a point of entry for abuse and misuse. Our society has accepted that keeping unused medications in our homes is normal and are still somewhat reluctant and unaware of how to avoid this practice. Changing this “norm” starts with awareness, led by pharmacists through simple actionable implementation such as counseling on medication disposal and empowering patients in their healthcare decisions.
While medication disposal is just one step, focusing on patient-centered solutions will drive this change to prevent an epidemic.
