This course is designed for occupational therapists interested in expanding their knowledge about the role of OT in school-based settings. It provides information about current legislation affecting practice including IDEA and the evolution of NCLB (No Child Left Behind) to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The course includes information about best practice including the updated OT Practice Framework - Fourth Edition (OTPF-4) and practice strategies with children with special needs including autism, learning disability, and behavioral disorders. Issues of ethical practice are included in this review of the OT process.
Course Objectives:
- Differentiate between school-based practice and medical/clinical pediatric practice
- Recognize the role of the OT in teams
- Identify the purpose of related services in a school setting
- Recognize the impact of diversity on student participation and occupational performance
- Identify eligibility requirements for OT and the related service categories of school intervention
- Identify evaluations used in school practice including pre-referral and referral processes
- Identify the components of written reports and generation of IFSP/IEP/IIIP
- Identify relevant state and federal guidelines impacting OT practice in school systems
